Strong Grooves, Vol. 1 (feat. Russ Kleiner)
Strong Songs
The Guitarist's Replay of a Zaggingaboo Motalistes Drum Groove
A billion guitars have played this riff in the decade since leo first recorded it, but no one has ever made it sound that specific. It all comes down to that first note, which he kind of spanks in this certain way. He doesn't just pluck the string there, and he doesn't just hit it with his pick. So i spent a while trying to cop this sound. The best that i could come up with was doing a sort of finger pull on the note with the fleshy part of my index finger on one side of the string and the pick on the other. Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
