The last time a Trial by Combat took place in England was in 1446. In 1818, William Ashford went to trial against Abraham Thornton for the murder of his wife and her brother. The terms of the combat were set firm: They would meet in a 60-foot-square jousting list. But nobody actually participated until after both accused and accuser had died.
