The Legacy of John Meir

John Meir called native people savages and wrote that they quote, seemed to have no right place in the landscape. He saw all fire as a threat and he pushed hard to keep it out of Yosemite. By the late 1960s, the Park Service started to change course. It stopped putting out all naturally occurring wildfires. And reintroduced some intentional burning here and there. But without good fire, Yosemite's meadows turned into dense forests.
