The Story of the Moeba Ina
The Moeba Ina was born sometime in 1843 in the village of Oki Odon near the coast in modern day Nigeria. For centuries Yoruba had been under the protection and direction of the powerful Oyo empire. During a raid on her village, five-year-old Ina saw both of her parents decapitated by their captors. Some traditional scarification marks On Ina's face gave her captors some vital information about her lineage. As such, she was more valuable to King Gazeo as a symbol rather than a commodity to be traded with the Europeans. She was therefore taken to the city of Obomi, the capital of Dahome, and placed in
