The Moeba Ina was born sometime in 1843 in the village of Oki Odon near the coast in modern day Nigeria. For centuries Yoruba had been under the protection and direction of the powerful Oyo empire. During a raid on her village, five-year-old Ina saw both of her parents decapitated by their captors. Some traditional scarification marks On Ina's face gave her captors some vital information about her lineage.
