The Purpose of the Btya Sutra

Commentators characterize their task as the amplification nor expansion of what is said in the sutra. The goal was not to provide an alternative version of the text that is easier to follow, rather it was to guide the reader through the original text. Like the Greek commentaries devoted to Plato and Aristotle in the same historical period, the Bātya's have a fundamentally pedagogical purpose.
