How to Improve the Structural Quality of Nickel Base Alloys?
In nickel base alloys, you can make cracks grow particularly slowly if the grains are very big. This is because of the way they deform and means you get angular growth through them. But as we move to higher stresses in fuel efficiency, it's also important to optimise a microstructure for these materials. The team came up with something that would give us a large grain with a necklace of small grains around it.
