A History of the Norse Religions
The only known large building specially dedicated to worship of the Norse deities was the monumental temple at Uppsala in Sweden. Aside from offerings and blots, there also was a complex practice of divination,. often by putting a special trained seer or prophet into a trance state. And many of the important Norse cosmological and mythological poems, like the poem describing Ragnarok that I quoted earlier, were delivered especially by female prophets and seers.
