The entertainment industry began taking up true crime without any of the moral pretense found in the early ballads and broadsides. The story of John Thirtel, accused of murdering William Weir over a gambling debt, became a sensation. Two weeks before his trial, two different plays debuted in London based on the murder. While I was stuck in prison appealing my verdict, Lifetime aired a movie depicting me as a deeply suspicious attention whore. They had no compunctions about how their entertainment product might affect my life.
