The King and Death in Egypt

The king was the source of the egyptian peoples ka, which nourished them. He embodied the essence of all his people and served as mediator with divine. Subsidiary tombs surrounded the pyramid complexes. The most numerous tombs belonged to the king's high officials. They defined themselves in terms of their relationship with and proximity to the king. In the words of mark laner and zahi hoas, this hierarchy of death reflected and even helped to create, the structure of egyptian society.
