Nolan purposely avoided giving the Joker an origin story, changed his canonical chemical scarring to knife wounds. There was not a ton of wild stuff that happened before or after filming. Michael Caine did not think that the movie would work and that it would be impossible for Jack Nichols for Ledger to top Jack Nicholson's performance in Batman.
