Housing under capitalism is produced primarily as something to be sold for a profit. Capitalists concentrate their investments in industries and geographical regions that are most profitable, while simultaneously extracting from or neglecting other areas. The development of capitalist cities exemplifies this phenomenon. As capitalist investment concentrated in cities, workers did as well. Many moved from rural areas characterized by underinvestment into the cities to pursue employment. At the end, we discuss the practical implications of a revolutionary understanding of gentrification.
