In 1961, the AHA said you should eat a lower fat diet and avoid saturated fat. The theory is that polyunsaturated fats have beneficial effects on LDL which are what causes heart disease. But when people took corn oil to see if it helped their cholesterol go down, more of them died from heart disease. They buried the results for 15 years before they were finally published.
