The History of the Philippines
The name filipinas was actually given by the spaniards when they came to colonize the philippines. It wasn't until later in the sixteenth, increasingly the seventeenth century that the name was applied to those areas that were colonized by the spanish. And it became appropriated by filippinos who were unhappy spanish rule andclaimed a stake in the colony. The wordphilippines spellet with a p h, of course, is the anglicized version of filipinas, which would be the sp Spanish term.
