There's a procity between private and public life, as we all know. And that kind of impulse to make sense is precisely what our aunt is writing against. She calls it the work of understanding. It's a continuous and ongoing process. We can't fully know in the way that we might like. Because if we can know, then we can deal with it. The social for aren corresponded to the collapse where social interest and consumerism started to dominate every aspect of contemporary life. When we see these distinctions collapsing, for her, it it's a kind of sign that freedom is being lost.
