The Power of Metaphors

The way humans function is a metaphor of machinery. It's not a disaster to use the word functioning with regard to people, but it's helpful to back up and say that when I'm using this word, I am talking about those parts of our humanity that are a little bit like a machine. And so many of our metaphors in this modern age about ourselves as human beings and our relationships are drawn from technology, from science, from machinery, and we don't even realize it.
