Is Democracy on the Edge of Some Precipice?
The most substantive democratic reforms historically, to me, have been in franchisements. The fear of experimentation is high and somehow tinkering feels like it might undo the whole thing. I don't think that we're such different societies with such different outlooksthat the risks have been overplayed. And there's a lot of historical evidence that when democratic politics gets into a rut, the way to move it forward is not technical structural fix.
