Molecules with opposite chiral forms have contrasting patterns of spin, electronic spin. This can mean that they interact differently with magnetic materials. Magnetic minerals from Earth's crust applied to a mixture of different RIO molecules showed there was a bias in the ones that settled on one form. The bias could then sort of self propagate and eventually form pure single-handed RIO crystals.
