Introduction

John Preskall is the Richard P. Feynman Professor of Physics at Caltech and also Director of its Institute for Quantum Information and Matter. John's background is in fundamental particle physics and cosmology, which is what he was working on when I first got to know him. As a graduate student did some work in cosmology that basically changed the future of cosmology because his work on monopoles in the universe motivated Alan Guth to think about inflation. He has helped establish and lead one of the leading centers in that area.
