A good man at arms can be pleasing to god. Our friend jean saw himself, of course, as a pious man. He asked for their blessing if he was troubled by any contradictions between that piety and his vocation as a knight. Reformers and critics of chivalry constantly tried to re orient the knight's ideas of honor. They tried to point them toward virtue and service, rather than individual pride and vainglore.
