In jesus day, in his rabbinical world the first century, this is a radical concept that he keeps pushing over and over and over again. To this day, i have not found one single version of the amida which has any mention of us forgiving our debtors. That's because in jewish consciousness, you wouldn't ask that. Forgiveness is critical. Tora was meant to teach us how to change our it was meant to change our hearts. And if you really hunger and thirst for righteousness, the only way we can get there is to show mercy on those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
