The Negative Unconscious in Therapy

In therapy, the way I think of it, rather than a dynamic unconscious, is I'll say to my patients, well, you came up with a coping mechanism when you were eight years old because these were the resources you had and that was the best you could come up with. Then we are a product of our experiences. We learn in a certain way. So implicit learning says, whatever two events come together, you associate them so that the first one seems to you to be a precursor of the second one and therefore cause the second one. Well, that tends to be true, but it also cannot be true.
