In the 18 fifties and sixties, there was not yet such a great interest among the victorian middle class in esotericism. There's also no reference in the poem to the eucharist or the passion of christ. And presumably tennyson was affected here by the same sort of inhibition as those earlier publishers of le mortartour,. that there was just too much theological baggage connected to the early stories of the grail.
