What Kind of Advice Would You Give to Undergrads Thinking About Going to Biology?
Gorna was studying micrisal networks that are in symbiosis with plant roots. She is trying to understand how legums control the growth of risobia on their root system. The bacteria can fix atmospheric nitrogen, but they're not all as good as one another. Some actually try to divert energy from the plant and use it for their a reproduction. That's a brilliant evolutionary strategy, especially if everybody else on the root system is busy fixing nitrogen. Gorna: These transitions in what we call individuality, they're very rare, and they really require strict conditions.
