55% of the first 623 surgeries Watts and Freeman carried out had what they described as good results. 3% died during or immediately after the surgery. Nurses reported that patients needed to relearn how to eat and handle other basic tasks. The fact that lobotomy patients were dull, quiet, uncoordinated, and lazy was an improvement over manic episodes and excessive activity.
