The Life of Augustine

In book seven of his autobiography, Augustine confesses to having used a sex worker. He also tells us that he had been in a monogamous sexual relationship for a long time. In the 4th century court positions cost money and an ambitious man needed capital to propel his career. His mother thought that if Augustine were married he'd be a couple of steps closer to being a baptized Catholic convert.
