There's another internet fan theory that Kevin grew up to be jigsaw, the titular killer in the saw franchise. Director Chris Columbus really wanted to do snow dressing as part of the background for the movie, but that costs a lot of money and was deemed too expensive. The production donated some of the artificial snow they had created out of wax and plastic to the lyric opera of Chicago where it has since been used in a number of their productions. And then of course we can't forget the movie within the movie, the pitch perfect gangster pastiche, angels with filthy souls.
