There was a large European population of about 1.6 million people in Algeria, as roughly 15% of the total population in 1962. The year after the referendum for independence that lead to the formation of the OAS it's a very very different experience looking at the dissolution of the French Empire and the British Empire. So many countries have broken away from European empires, mostly following the borders had been drawn up by them but then many of the smallest states tried to break away again. This is foresight rarely covered, that internal struggle and it's very evident whether you read the book or watch the movie, the day of the Jackal.
