The Desire of Knowledge Is Not What You Want

You are a split subject, a divided subject made up of all these connected yet ultimately distinct entities. This is what Lacan is getting at here with truth versus knowledge, psychoanalysis versus philosophy. Unconscious truth, psychoanalysis pursues. And conscious awareness, knowledge of self, pure and complete knowledge of oneself, that philosophy promises. The joint is the minimum gap required between two entities to allow them to remain distinct. That's exactly what we're talking about here. Why? Not because it aims at wholeness. All desire aims at the acquisition of objects that we believe will make us whole.
