The book is about the life of Mary, an abbess who rose to power in 14th century France. She was born a rape victim and had been sent away from her mam when she was 12 for being too big and ugly to get married. Her ambition led her to become one of the most powerful women in Europe at the time. But there were also consequences that came along with this high-powered lifestyle.
