What Is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation?

Levca: Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is a system of ocean currents that span the whole length of the atlantic. Warm and relatively salty water masses are travelling northward in the atlantics, says Levca. As they get more and more north or into colder regions, basically the overlying atmosphere is cooling these water masses down, so they getting colder. And then at certain places in the south polar north atlantic, often actually kind of close to greenland, these water masses start to sink. They are sinking to deeper ocean layers, and then form a southward return flow of water.
