Is There a Respectability in Dulness?
Dulness is not such a bad strategy over all, for individuals or societies. I think we all might be feeling that we could do with a bit of dionysus in our lives next year. The amount of sort of public duty that he put in during the years of the first world war was quiteastonishing. He didn't want any press attention. There was no attempt to project the image of him as being a king who was stretching the limits of public service.
