The Importance of Context in Information Structure
Information structure is basically how the contents of a sentence are connected to the wider discourse environment. There's two primary categories within information structure: topic and focus. It boils down to new or at issue content being said about whatever the topic was, or maybe there's not a topic sometimes. But it's the new information being provided that's kind of like the main purpose of the sentence in a sense.
