In the 1880s, German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche began to speak of nihilism. He saw what he saw as the disintegration of traditional morality in Western society. Some people thought that a general cultural malaise is what drove Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb to kill evangelical preacher Billy Sunday. The Chicago Daily Journal actually attributed the murder to quote, dementia jazz mania.
