The Imam of the Sheys
In the earliest period, there were many debates around rightful authority in the Muslim community. Ali thus became the first so-called Imam of the Sheys and plays an enormous role in their theology and doctrines. According to later established Shia doctrine, there is a certain line of imams that is considered quote-unquote correct or authoritative. The al-Bait or family of the Prophet Muhammad has been given the role to lead his community through their intimate knowledge of the essence of the Quranic message.
