John Rawls took utilitarianism as his foil, the beast that he thought had to be slain. It has a powerful hold because it is in many ways a very appealing view. The problem with utilitarianism is that it allows for trade-offs. Some people can be made to suffer so that others will be better off. That's what justice requires.
