The Birth of Complex Numbers

In 16th century Italy, they discovered a formula for solving cubic equations. Jouril Ama Cardano published this formula and ran into difficulties. This was the birth of what's called complex numbers. In Victorian times, Thomas Edison tried to convince people that alternating current was far more dangerous than direct current. He even got his employees to build an electric chair so he could use it as proof. But three years later someone else came along who realised how simple these maths really were. And now we all live with them in our own homes.
