The Evolution of Deep Learning
When it first started, the classic NLP pipeline was to replace a piece with a neural model. And then at some point it became more end-to-end like you say. The thing that kind of really convinced me was when the results got really good for that. So I think we did kind of give up on some problems implicitly just with a shift from sort of a more linguistically focused tasks to more end tasks. But in the end, end tasks are very well motivated and exciting.
