There's this classic paper from Ivo Diva, which is the Alberken Gale paper. And they looked at patterns of loss in evolution in salamanders and frogs. You can lose a digit axially or distally, right, on one side of the hand or on the other side of the hands. There were also some preferences about which digits tended to lose phalanges.
