There's a lot of pressure to be devoted or obsessed about a particular thing, at least in some cultural spheres. I think one thing that the Stoics note is that when you're thinking about your roles, you need to think about things like what are my talents? What are my innate dispositions, my limitations? And also, what are some of my relationships that I have chosen or have naturally? Those sorts of things may mean that even though there are lives that we put up on a pedestal, perhaps sometimes correctly for being exemplary ones, they are not the ones that are going to be right for you.
