These social forces were exasperated by the religious factors. How many able administrators were caught up in the cycles of religious purges and counter purges? It would be impossible to calculate, but i can't help but think that everyone would have been better served if they had left religion alone. At a moment when the empire needed unity, religious intolerance acted as a disuniting force.
