Engineering management is a 24-hour job, not an eight hour job. How do you balance being in meetings with keeping up with the code base and contributing meaningful work? It becomes harder as you progress in your career to unblock problems that are very different then what they used to be. You don't want your technical skills to atrophy if you don't continually feed them. Give your team explicit time to take for themselves - it's generally recognized to be a good practice. A lot of places will do like flex time with engineers trying out projects or doing their own research on blog posts.
