The possibility that it was a laboratory leak was seriously considered by senior officials. But they never made this public, and we only found out about it through leak demails. The media obediently followed suit and censored any conversation about the possibility of a laboratory leak. And in the case of facebook, they banned discussion of it, and you were literally not allowed to raised the possibility of the laboratory. Fortunately, twitter did allow it, and a bunch of very ingenious people on twitter started conversing about it and digging into chinese web sits. These are the heroes of our book. We call them the internet sleuths.
