The Importance of Understanding a Fellow
Much critical ink has been spilled on whether we are to understand a fellow as an ethnically marked inhabitant of North Africa. Shakespeare's company performed at court during the time of that embassy and so they may well have seen these visitors from North Africa. The second meaning, which is associated but not entirely identical with this one, is a more general designation, more meaning Muslim. But basically a Black a fellow, a dark racially marked Black a fellow was less sympathetic and therefore less tragic than an Arabic one.
