Solon's Prostitution in Athens
The Hellenistic poet Philharmon praised him for this measure. Even if the historical accuracy of this anecdote can be doubted, it is clear that by attributing it to Solon, the classical Athenians considered prostitution to be a part of their democracy. Its Philharmon highlights, the Solonian brothels provided a service accessible to all, regardless of income.
