The Effect of Variability on Learning

In a study by capo, year nine students were expected to learn the meaning of variability. They also had to be able to compute variants in data sets as a measure of variability. But on items measuring data analysis, conceptual insight and transfer, the finding out group did better than the being told group. And it's not just that they learn more stuff, but they learn the other stuff better because they have a better generalization of the concept behind what they're doing.
