Introduction

Ahab, a whaleman from nantucket, lost his leg at sea. He had never stepped on board of any vessel but his own until now. The captain of the strange ship offered to help him up and onto its side. Ahab was forced to use an ingenious mechanical device in order to do so. But it left him with only one arm which he could hardly hope to hold together.
