The Athenians and the Athenian Alliance
Athens was riding high in the mid 450s BC, after several successes against the Corinthians, Epidarians, Adonitians, and Boetians. They were so emboldened by their success that they had sent a fleet to aid the Egyptians in their revolt against Persia. In 453 BC, Pericles continued what Ptolemedes had started two years earlier by leading a naval expedition into the Corinthian Gulf. Meanwhile, Arathry, an Ionian city in Asia Minor, revolted from the League. The Athenians managed to put down the revolt rather easily though, in 452 BC, and then they placed hard regulations on the Arathreans. Some
