Athens was riding high in the mid 450s BC, after several successes against the Corinthians, Epidarians, Adonitians, and Boetians. They were so emboldened by their success that they had sent a fleet to aid the Egyptians in their revolt against Persia. In 453 BC, Pericles continued what Ptolemedes had started two years earlier by leading a naval expedition into the Corinthian Gulf. Meanwhile, Arathry, an Ionian city in Asia Minor, revolted from the League.
