As we move on to the age of enlightenment and beyond, so like the 17th, 18th century onwards, epilepsy becomes less about drinking someone's pee from a shoe and more about systematic study. One thing that helped tremendously with this was the rise in anatomical dissections, which for hundreds of years prior had been viewed as sacrilegious. For the first time, anatomists were able to link certain diseases with observable changes in the structure or function of body parts. And that included epilepsy in changes in the brain, such as an abscess or a tumor or a hemorrhage in someone with the condition.
