The Supreme Court's Role in the American Constitution
With Marbury v. Madison, Marshall claimed that the Constitution of the United States was a higher form of law than any passed by Congress. Even Thomas Jefferson, after hearing of the decision, could only shake his head in wonder and aggravation. In an 1804 letter following the decision, Jefferson wrote: "So great is his sovastry"
