South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa says the political declaration represents an important breakthrough in this effort. Steve Nichols is head of mitigation at South Africa's Presidential Climate Commission, which advises government on climate policy and energy transition. They need to get electricity back to people, but are they betting on renewables to do this or more on coal? So I would say at the moment they're betting more on restoring coal power, just because in theory that's a much quicker route to electrons on the grid.
